Place                                     : Rampur
Duration                              : 03 days
Special Attraction              : Exhibitions, Cultural programmes and trade stalls.

The International Lavi Fair of Rampur is held in November. It is a three days celebration is held each year from 11-14 of November. Lavi once served as a major trading center and the stopover point on the old trade routes that led to Kinnaur, Tibet, Ladakh and Afghanistan. The Lavi Fair, is almost 400 years old and dates back to time when Raja Kehari Singh of Rampur Bushahr state signed a treaty to promote trade with Tibet.

The traders from Tibet used to bring raw wool, herbs and leather products and take back wheat flour, rice, spices, butter, farm implements and livestock. A three-day horse trade-cum-exhibition was organised before the beginning of the Lavi Fair.

The main attraction during the fair every year is the sale and purchase of Chamurthi horses -- an endangered species known as the ''ship of the cold desert''. Being a surefooted animal, it is mainly used for transporting goods in the Himalayas. The Chamurthi horse traces its origin to the Tibet region. In India, it is bred in the villages of Himachal Pradesh bordering China. According to the livestock census, there are around 1,100 Chamurthi horses in Kinnaur and Lahaul and Spiti districts in the state.

The Lavi fair has its own historical importance and is famous not only for trading activities but also for its age old long traditions, which even today remains as vibrant as ever. It plays an important role in preserving the rich cultural heritage of state and restoring old glory. The fair provided a good opportunity for promotion and sale of woolens, dry fruits and other traditional crafts and products, besides benefiting the traditional craftsmen and farmers. Such trade fairs also provide self-employment opportunities to the rural people.

Rampur Bushahr is a town and a municipal council in Shimla district in the  Himachal Pradesh. It is about 126 km from Shimla and is well connected with National Highway  which passes through Theog and  Narkanda.

Bushahr was once among the largest of the twenty-eight Shimla Hill States under the administration of the British Raj. Rampur, a small township situated at 1,005 mts. on the left bank of the Sutlej, and used to be the capital of former princely state of Bushahr in the 18th-century. Since it fell on the ancient trade route to Afghanistan, Ladakh, China and Tibet, Rampur buzzed with mercantile activity, especially in November during the Lavi fair, the largest trading event in the north Himalayas attracting traders from Kashmir, Ladakh, Yarkand, and the Indian mainland. "About 400 years ago during the regime of Raja Kehar Singh of Bushahr, a trade treaty was signed between the Bushahr State and Tibet. Horses from Tibet and swords from Bushahr were exchanged in token of this friendship. It was written in the treaty that their friendly relations would continue till this time. Since then, it is presumed that trade relations increased and eventually and Lavi fair was held."

The town seems to be equally divided across both banks of Sutlej. Some of the best things to buy here include shawls, chilgoza or pine nuts, handicraft items, crop produce, dry fruits from Kinnaur, and the trademark soft sheep wool. Some people even trade livestock during the fair such as sheep, goat, cow and horses. The city is also the home to Asia's largest underground Hydro Power Project - The Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station built by Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd.

Minjar Mela

Chamba Minjar

Name of the Festival          : Minjar Mela

Date                                      : July/August
Place                                     : Chamba

Duration                              : One week
Special Attraction          : Traditional Kunjari Malhar Song, sung by the local artists, traditional  dance, local deities, State fair of Himachal Pradesh

Minjar is the most popular fair of Chamba which is attended by a large number of people from all over the country.. Minjar means ‘tassels’ and Mela means ‘fair’. It is on this day that offerings are made to the God of rain who is known as The Varuna, specifically in Ravi river to drive away the evil spirits and pray for their prosperity.  These offerings contain things like coconut, flowers, coin and some fruits along with paddy as well.

An agricultural festival, the Minjar Fair is an event of joy and prosperity. According to Indian history, when the Raja of Chamba was coming back to Chamba after defeating the King of Trigarta, now known as Kangra in the year 935 A.D., he was given a warm welcome by the people who greeted him with bundles of paddy and maize. This was the first time the Minjar Mela was held and celebrated.

The week long fair begins when the Minjar flag is hoisted in historical Chowgan. The town of Chamba wears a colourful look with every person turning out in best attire. Sports and cultural programmes are organised. On the third Sunday the gaiety, colorfulness and enthusiasm reaches its crescendo when the colourful Minjar procession of the deities accompanied by dancing troupes, traditionally attired locals, traditional drum beaters along with Police and Home Guards band, begins its march from Akhand Chandi Palace for the venue near the Police Lines Nalhora. A great concourse of people is already assembled there. Earlier the Raja and now the chief guest throws a coconut, a rupee, a seasonal fruit and a Minjar tied in a red piece of cloth – Lohan – as offering to the river. This is followed by all the people throwing their Minjars into the river. Traditional Kumjari-Malhar is sung by the local artists. Betal leaves and ittra are offered to everyone among the invitees as a gesture of respect and festivity. Untill 1943, a live buffalo used to be pushed into the river to propitiate it. It if was carried away and drowned, the event was regarded as propitious, the sacrifice having been accepted. If it crossed the river and reached the other bank, that also was auspicious as it was believed that all the sins of the town were transferred to the other side of the river.

Minjar fair has been declared as one of the state fairs of Himachal Pradesh. Undoubtedly Chamba is at its very best during this fair that generally falls in the month of July/ August.
