This trek follows a traditional trade route between Spiti and south-east Ladakh’s Rupshu region. Kaza(Kibber), the start point of this trek expedition is approachable from Shimla and Manali .This trek takes around 9 days. The best time to do this trek is from Mid August to End of September. The highest point in this trek is Parang La. It starts in the high meadows of Kibber and descends the Kibber Gorge, then climbs over the Parang Glacier, source of the Pare Chu river. This high-altitude trek traverses high passes and glaciers and beautiful peaks and pastures from the enchanting Spiti valley in Himachal to the picturesque Tsomoriri Lake in Ladakh. In earlier times, the traders of Tibet, Ladakh and Changthang valley used to reach La Darcha fair of Kaza for trade through this route where Changspa nomads came mainly to barter wool and barley in exchange for salt.

Detail Itinerary :

 

Day 01) Manali–Rohtang Pass(3980 m)-Kunzum Pass(4551 m)-Kaza /201 Km / 09 hrs drive

Drive to Kaza over Rohtang and Kunzum Pass

Kaza is the sub-divisional headquarters of Spiti, situated on the left bank of river Spti on National Highway. This is the main market in the Spiti valley. It has all modern facilities and is connected by road with Manali & Shimla except in the winter months.

Day 02) Kaza - Kibber- Dumla (4550 Mts.) / 01 hour drive + 03 hrs Trek

Drive to Kibber and trek starts to Dumla

Enroue visit Ki and Kibber

Ki Monastery: Situated in Spiti about 11 kms from Kaza was founded by Dromton (1008-64 A.D), the founder of the Ge-lug-pa sect in the 11th century. On the left bank of the Spiti River the Ki Gompa (4116) is regarded as the largest and the oldest monastery in the sub-division.  Thousands of devotees from all over the world here attended the Kalachakra ceremony which was performed in August, 2000 by His Holiness Dalai Lama.

Kibber : Kibber is 11 km from Ki Gompa, and is the highest settlement in the world (4205 meters) with a motorable road and electricity. The Ladarcha festival held here each July attracts Buddhists from all over the world. The Pin Valley, south of the Dhankar gompa, has been declared as a national park, where one might see the snow leopard. The 600-year-old Kungri Gompa here is worth a visit.

The day can be started easy as the trek is not much hard but it will take time because of the first day and some distance moving through the boulders. These stones shine like gold in the sunlight and evening they become dark and quite, yes we see Mount Kanamo in front of us while trekking this day. We camp at Dumla.

Day 03) Dumla - Thaltak Ground (4875 Mts.) /05 hours

After continuing the climb for a few Kms, one obtains a spectacular view of Kang Nilda (6303m) to the southeast .To the northwest one can see several peaks standing above Kunzam Pass. The trail then descends for about an hour to reach Thaltak camping ground. We camp at Thaltak Ground.

Day 04) Thaltak - Jagtha (4785 Mts.) and further trek to Bonrojen (5180 MTs.) /07 hours

The trail descends precariously over shifting shelves of sand and debris of moraine: goes down to the Parilungbi gorge and continues along the river as far as Jagtha camping ground. Some people camp here but our guides have decided to move further to Boroglen or Bonrojen which is 6 Kms further from Jagtha.  After Jagtha, we have steep climb for some time and later we find are two Glaciated valleys, one to the north and the other to the south. Our destination trail follows the northern moraine and reaches Boroglen/ Bonrojen Camping ground. We camp here for the night.

Day 05) Bonrojen - PARANG LA (5578 M) to Dak Karzong (4940 Mts.) / 05 hours

Today we trek to cross Parang La. After making its way over scree and a few patches of snow, the trail climbs gradually up to Parang La.  The top of this Pass presents spectacular viewpoints of the peaks and ranges of Lahaul and Ladakh; and Parang Chu, whose source is on the southern slopes of Parang La, can be seen below. The last two hours are quite challenging but it rewards you with the honour to stand at the top of ancient trade route of Ladakh and Tibet traders. You can see the first glimpse of Paralungbi peak as the first peak of Ladakh this side, both sides are open to see and enjoy, the Spiti and the Changthang Valley from the top.
We start getting down from the top towards the flow of Para Chu River and join the vast length of plains where we are free to camp anywhere. We camp at Dak Karzong for the night.

Day 06) Dak Karzong - Datang Yongma (4725 Mts.) / 05 hours

Today we cross the river close to campsite and follow the left bank of Pare Chu. Now the valley becomes broaden and we can see the huge area of about sixty Kms stretch through Kharas, Dokpo Phirtse, Dakar, Kuru and Thaktote, which are places where Changpas (Tibetan Nomads) stays during summer time. We cross the small tributaries and reach to our campsite Datang Yongma.

Day 07) Datang Yongma - Chumik Shilde through Norbu Sumdo (4660 Mts.) / 06 hours

 Today we cross the Para Chu River and trek further to the right side where landscape changes from dusty plain to green pasture ground. We prefer to start early because the winds can be strong in the afternoon, we meet Changpas (Tibetan Nomads) on this route and we can see the route going towards Chumur Village which is the bordering village of India towards China and restricted to visit.

Day 08) Chumik Shilde - Tsomoriri (4510 Mts.) / 05 hours

Today we meet a wonderful and exciting day of trekking tour through pasture and sandy patches of the valley becomes broader and broader. Leaving Chumik Shilde and crossing stream finally arrive at Tso-moriri Lake at Kiangdom- named after the kiangs (wild Tibetan asses) which roam here freely. The lake is 24 Kms in length and 6 Kms wide. Changpas can be seen with their flocks of sheep, goats and yaks near around the lake. Kyang, Tibetan wild ass), birds like: bar headed goose, the migratory birds, black-necked ducks are also found around the lake.

Day 09) Tsomoriri - Karzog (4527 Mts.) / 06-07 hours

This is your last day of trek along the shores of Tsomoriri Lake following the spectacular view of Lungsar Kangri Peak which offers a background tough to forget.  The walk is longer than it looks and with the afternoon winds you will be tired when you reach Karzog. Our guide will take you to the ancient monastery in Karzog and later we camp here at Karzog.

Day 10) Karzog – Leh(3500 Mts.) / 213 Km / 08-09 hrs. drive

Drive to Leh

Leh town (3505 mts.)  is the headquarter of the Leh District and  is the the largest town of Ladakh with an area of 45110 Sq Km. Town is bounded by Pakistan occupied Kashmir in the West, China in the north and eastern part, and Lahul Spiti of Himachal  Pradesh  in  South East. In the ancient times the present Leh district was a part of Greater Ladakh spread over from Kailash Mansarover to Swaat (Dardistan). For a long time Leh remained the capital of the Rajas of Ladakh. Leh became an important centre for trade in Central Asia. It opened for foreigner in 1974 and since then Leh became an important destination in India. The most attractive feature of the landscape of Ladakh is the Buddhist monasteries.

Day 11) Full day visit of Hemis, Shey, Thiksey monastery & Leh Palace

Leh Palace: Leh Palace is one of the major attractions in ladakh. The palace was built in the 17th century and had nine storeys , but it is now dilapidated and deserted. It was the home of the royal family until they were exiled to Stok in the 1830s. Above the palace, at the top of the Namgyal hill, is the Victory Tower, built to commemorate Ladakh's victory over the Balti Kashmir armies in the early 16th century. This palace built for King Singge Namgyal.

Shey Palace & Monastery: The Palace is 15 Km from Leh town, King Deldan Namgyal built it in 17th century. He also built a monastery there. The main image in the monastery is the two- storey tall statue of Buddha Shakyamuni, made of copper, installed by King Deldan Namgail in the memory of his father Singay Namgail.

Hemis Monastrey: The Hemis Monastery is the biggest and wealthiest monastery in Ladakh. It is situated 45 Km to the south of Leh and built in 1630 by first incarnation of Stagsang Raspa Nawang Gyats, who was invited to Ladakh by king Singee Namgyal. The king offered him religious estates through out the region. Monastery belongs to Drugpa Order (Red Hat sect.) and has largest Thangka painting in Ladakh, which is over 12 mts. in length and which is exhibited once in 12 years. The Festival of Hemis is the most popular festival, held in June-July and dedicated to Lord Padmasambhava, which is characterized by colorful masked dances.

Thiksey Monastery: Thiksey is 18 km south of Leh and situated on the top of a hill. This is most imposing Monastery in the Ladakh. It belongs to Gelukpa order. The Monastery was first build at Stakmo by Sherab Zangpo of Stod. Later the nephew of Sherab Zangpo, Spon Paldan Sherab, founded the Thiksay Gonpa on a hill top to north of Indus river in 1430 AD. The festival of Thiksey Gustor is held in the October-November. Around 80 monks are in residence. There are images of Maitriya Buddha, Sakyamuni, thousand armed Avaloketshvara, Budhisattvas and an excilent library in the Monastery.
